The Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest is open to all students attending home schools, public, parochial, or private high schools who are in their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior (grades 9 through 12) year of study.

Contest Description

Conducted at the Chapter, State Society and National Society levels, a student gives an original oration from memory of not less than five minutes or more than six minutes.  The subject shall deal with an event, personality, or document pertaining to the Revolutionary War and show a relationship to America today.  The oration must be essentially the same as a submitted manuscript.  Notes and props (including military uniforms) may not be used in the presentation.

Contest Entry

The Chapter Oration Contest Committee Chairman can supply the official entry form.  The form and double spaced, typewritten oration script are to be submitted to the Chairman in early November.  The chapter contest will be held during the November luncheon meeting (3rd Wednesday of the month) of the chapter at the Montgomery Country Club.  Luncheon expenses will be provided for the contestant.  Accompanying coaches, advisors or parents are asked to pay the established luncheon cost.  The chapter winner and family will also be invited to attend the chapter’s Winter banquet in December, also held at the Montgomery Country Club (sorry, we can only pay for the oration winner’s meal).

The chapter winner will be invited to compete in the Alabama Society contest, conducted during the Alabama Society’s Annual Convention, to be held in February or March.  Mileage and meal expenses up to $75 (amount may vary), if requested, will be paid by the chapter for the first place winner to attend that contest.  If selected as the state winner, the student and two accompanying adults are invited to the Convention’s Saturday evening banquet with meals paid by the state and where the winner will receive his or her awards.

The winner of the state contest will be invited to compete in the National Society contest held each year in June or July in various locations around the nation.

Contest Awards

Cash awards are presented at Chapter, State, and National levels.  The Alabama Society will pay a traveling allowance to the 1st place state winner and one accompanying adult to attend the national contests.  This allowance; e.g., $500-$1500, varies depending on the location.  The 1st  place national winner is awarded $3000 (amount may vary).
